Earlier this week, R-CALF USA claimed a major win regarding animal ID because USDA retracted a memo regarding the administration of Premises Identification Numbers during USDA Animal Disease Program Activities.

While USDA may have retracted their original memo, R-CALF failed to note that  USDA issued a revised memo in its place according to Neil Hammerschmidt, Coordinator for the National Animal Identification System.     ...

While USDA continues to tout the National Animal ID System as a voluntary program, R-CALF USA claims USDA is taking steps to ensure that some livestock producers have no choice in the matter.

A Veterinary Services Memo dated September 22, 2008 called for premises registration for producers engaged in interstate commerce and who participate in any one of the 13 federally regulated disease programs—including brucellosis and scrapie. Three months after issuing that memo, USDA’s Veterinary Services cancelled it.

New Management Plan for Missouri Breaks Nat'l Monument

Federal officials have approved a new management regime for the Missouri River Breaks National Monument, the 590 square mile monument created in 2001 by President Bill Clinton, cutting through the remote and rugged middle of Montana, along a route explored by Lewis and Clark in the early 1880s.

33+ individuals tied to Madoff in Montana firm lose $18 million

At least 33 individuals tied to a Montana based investment business, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC., registered to do business in Montana since 1997, lost at least $18 million in the recently unveiled Wall Street ponzi scheme, including a client who lost money, along with his 94 year old mother, 95 year old aunt, brother and sister.

Electric going up slightly while gas going down in region

Consumers of electricity from Northwestern Energy in Montana will see only a one percent increase over current rates for the new year, but for residential gas customers of Northwestern and Montana Dakota Utilities, prices will remain well below historic summertime highs with MDU's gas rates generally 15 to 20 percent lower than Northwestern's.

U.S. HOG INVENTORY DOWN 2%

USDA's latest quarterly hogs and pigs report estimates U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs as of December 1, 2008 was 66.7 million head. This was down 2 percent from both December 1, 2007 and September 1, 2008.

Breeding inventory, at 6.08 million head, was down 2 percent from last year but up slightly from the previous quarter. Market hog inventory, at 60.6 million head, was down 2 percent from both last year and last quarter.

The September-November 2008 pig crop, at 28.4 million head, was down 4 percent from 2007 but up 6 percent from 2006. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 2.99 million head, down 6 percent from ...

Oldest man in U.S.A. lives in our own Great FAlls, Montana

The oldest man in the United States lives in Great FAlls. At 112 years and 99 days of age, Walter Breuning outlived george Francis who passed away Saturday in Sacramento, Calif., of congestive heart failure at the age of 112 years and 204 days.

Scientists monitoring over 250 earthquakes in Yellowstone

Scientists are closely monitoring more than 250 small earthquakes that have occurred since Friday in Yellowstone National Park. Swarms of small earthquakes happen frequently there but Robert Smith, a professor of geophysics at the University of Utah says it's very unusual to have so many over several days.

Video gambling machine tax collections down in fiscal 2008

A State Gambling Control Division report covering the two year period ending June 30th shows that state tax collections from video gambling machines rose 6.8% in fiscal year 2007 but dropped to a 4.4% growth rate in fiscal year 2008, possibly reflecting the national economic downturn and higher fuel prices then.

U of Utah seismograph stations report Yellowstone earthquakes

The University of Utah seismograph stations reported a swarm of small earthquakes, 3.5 or lower in magnitude, beneath Yellowstone Lake, five to nine miles south-southeast of fishing Bridge, a park landmark, in an area of the park where they are common. There were reports that people in the area felt the quakes which started Friday and intensified over the weekend.
