Idaho State Veterinarian Comments on Brucellosis Discovery

On Wednesday December 2nd, the discovery of one cow in eastern Idaho testing positive for Brucellosis, caused cattle producers to shudder…and to contemplate the impact on their industry.

As we have reported earlier the cow is 15 years old, and is one of the 600 that have been put together over the past two years in a herd in Teton County, which is straight south of West Yellowstone, along the Wyoming border.

Authorities have bled all the cows and their calves in that herd…and the bad news is that they found a second cow testing positive. However Dr. Bill Barton, Idaho State Veterinarian says the second cow was from the same herd, so maybe it will not cause Idaho to lose its Brucellosis Free Status.

On Tuesday December 8th, Dr, Barton was interviewed by Rick Haines. Here you can hear the Idaho State Veterinarian explain:

· How this case happened

· Why the investigation is challenging

· Why this cow tested positive for Brucellosis, even though she was Bangs-Vaccinated

· Why they think this case started in Wildlife

· Why they don’t think the two positive cows have any relationship to Montana or Wyoming

· How the proposed new updated APHIS regulations will change the rules to help ranchers

We invite you to listen to Tuesday morning’s exclusive eight-minute interview with Idaho State Veterinarian, Dr. Bill Barton for yourself.
