Most Winning Active Montana High School Football Coach
For the first time in many, many years the Montana high school football season will begin this fall without a head coach who is listened on the exclusive 200 wins list. This after the retirement of Jim Oberwiser of Drummond. Oberwiser’s 233 wins are 4th on the all-time win list.
The top 3 on this list are: Jack Johnson of CMR with 340 wins, Baker’s Don Schillinger with 318, and in 3rd Tim Racicot of Frenchtown. Those 3 coaches have also combined to win 19 state titles! There has only been 12 Montana high school football coaches who have ever won 200 or more games.
The most winning active coach title now belongs to Jim Stanton of Billings Central. Coach Stanton begins this 2017 football season with a win loss record of 189-59. Not far behind him is coach Don Peoples of Butte Central at 184-88.
Dillon’s Rick Nordahl has the best winning percentage for a coach who has been active for 3 years or more with a staggering 91% win loss record! Nordahl took over for Terry Thomas in 2013 and in his first season the Beavers went 12-0 and won state, the next year they went 10-2 and claimed their 2nd state title. In 2015 they lost in the championship game against Whitefish then last season they went on to win state. That’s 3 state titles in 4 years!
