Willie Banks To Light Torch At Big Sky State Games!
I am not sure how executive director Karen Sanford Gall does it but every year she has landed an Olympic athlete to light the torch to kick off the Big Sky State Games. Next week during the 32nd Big Sky State Games held in Billings the torch lighter will be three time Olympian Willie Banks. Banks is considered one of the best USA triple jumpers of all time! He qualified for three Olympic games in 1980, 1984 and 1988. Banks placed 6th at both the 84 and 88 games! His greatest success took place on June 16, 1985 when he set a work record in the triple jump of 58-11 1/2. That year Willie Banks was named the Track and Field News and U.S. Olympic committee Athlete of the year!
All 32 years the Big Sky State Games has had an Olympic athlete light the torch and and 22 of those athletes were Olympic gold medalist!
