Just a few inches of water can cost thousands of dollars in damage to walls, floors, furniture, carpets and other personal property and the mold it can leave behind can be deadly.

Commissioner of Securities and Insurance, Matt Rosendale is scheduled to join us on Voices of Montana this coming friday and one of the topics will be flood insurance, because flooding is the number one natural disaster.

In a recent insurance industries survey, 56% of people wrongly thought that their current homeowners insurance covers flooding but standard homeowners policies do not cover flooding at all.

Everyone should consider themselves susceptible to flooding and needs to take steps to be prepared for that risk. According to Rosendale, “Every property owner should consider options to purchase stand alone flood insurance.”

Montana has more private flood insurance options than ever. In 2015 the Montana legislature passed HB 94, Which opened the marketplace to consumers by allowing multi-peril insurance.

All homeowners should check their policies to see if your covered for flooding, because there is a 10 day waiting period before most flood insurance policies go into effect after purchasing.

For more information on flood insurance listen in to Voices of Montana, Friday, April, 21st, or go see your local insurance agent before it is too late.
