Best Legion Baseball Team Of All Time!
Yes Montana is a good state for high school basketball and football but you know what we are also very strong in baseball! Even if we are one of the few states that does not have high school baseball our legion program is very good. So what is the best American Legion baseball team in state history? Well that would have to be the Billings team of 1960!
The head coach was Mr. Ed Bayne! All coach Bayne did during his 28 seasons as the coach in Billings was have his team win a record 20 state titles! At one point they even won 14 in a row from 1954 to 67! His teams also made four trips to the American Legion World Series in 1958, 1960, 1961 and 1962! But it was that famed 1960 team with left handed pitcher Dave McNally that is considered the best of the best! Back in 1960 Billings advanced all the way to the national championship game before losing to New Orleans 9-3. That loss in the national title game was the only lose all year for Dave McNally! McNally’s win-loss record that summer was 18-1, his ERA 0.68, plus he also averaged 2.3 strike outs per inning! During the state legion tournament that year McNally pitched two no hitters!
Following that 1960 legion season the Baltimore Orioles gave Dave an $80,000 signing bonus. He had four 20 win seasons and even out pitched Don Drysdale to win the fourth and final game of the 1966 world Series. In that game McNally only gave up four hits in a 1-0 victory.
