From Ball Boy To One Of The State’s Top Players!
I am often asked of the thousands of the basketball games that I have announced over the years…what is my favorite? Well that is easy it’s the 2006 state class “C” title game at Metra. That night Melsone got by Gardiner 83-78 in over time. It was the first time and to this day the only time that three players scored over 30 points in a state title game! Adam Weisz of Melstone had 24 at the half and 34 for the game. Teammate Kale Eike some how scored the final 9 points of the game to send the contest into overtime! Than in the extra period Eike had 12 more points to finish with 36! Than in a losing effort Bodie Tobin of Gardiner put up 36!
Back in 2006 Melstone had just 20 students in their high school, as they became the smallest school to ever win a state basketball title! The head coach on that state championship team from 11 years ago Jason Grebe and the ball boy…well that would be coach Grebe’s son Brody. Today 6-2 Brody is one of the top scorers in the state averaging almost 30 points a game!
Melstone is off to a 6-0 start, averaging 73 points a game, while their opponents are averaging just 31! This Melstone ball club is also huge…they start 6-8, 6-5, 6-2, 6-1 and 6 foot. Plus coming off the bench they have players 6-6, 6-4 and 6-3.
