No Surprise….Basketball Scoring is Down Again!
The final score was CMR 81 and Bozeman 69! The 81 points scored by the Rustlers are the most points in a “AA” title game in 24 years! For the 12 games of the tournament “AA” teams averaged 57.2! That is the second highest average in the past 16 years. Than we have the state “C” boys. I was at the Butte Civic Center on Friday afternoon when Melstone and Belt combined to score just 57 points, in a 37-20 Melstone win. The eight “C” teams averaged only 52.8. That is the second lowest scoring state “C” in the past 66 years! Back in 2011 “C” teams averaged only 51!
The highest scoring tournament was the state “B” boys at 64.4. They had three games over 80. The 64 average is the highest since 2000 when class “B” teams averaged almost 66. The state record is 75 set in 1990. At that state event Lodge Grass had games of 100, 94 and 85! That will help any tournament’s average!
Finally a year ago the state record was set for the lowest scoring girls tournament of all time, that was the “AA” girls at just 39 points per team. In 2018 scoring was up but not by much…still 44 per teams is better than 39!
So why is it that high school basketball is down? Think about it…we have the three point shot now! I think the number one reason is that today their is a huge emphasis placed on defense.
