The Bobcats Won A National Basketball Title Back In 1929!
Tonight the men’s national championship game will be played. Did you know that back in 1929 the Montana State Bobcats were declared National Champions! The 1928-29 MSU team known as the Golden Bobcats went 36-2 that season and the Helms Athletic Foundation named them national champions. This team was so outstanding that they were also considered to be one of the greatest college basketball teams in the first half of the 20th century. That famous Bobcat team was led by John “Cat” Thompson who was named the player of the year. Cat Thompson a four time All American was inducted in the Basketball Hall Of Fame in 1962.
Now what made this team so special was how points they scored. Check this out the Golden Bobcats averaged 63 points game….with a jump ball after every score! They scored over 90 points five different times that season, including going for 110 against the Havre All Stars. The final score of that game was MSU 110 and Havre 10!
