He Could Be The Most Famous Griz Coach Of All Time!

So if the first Montana Grizzly football coach was Fred D. Smith than who was the first basketball coach?  According to the basketball media guide Montana played just four games total during their first three seasons but the head coach during that time is unknown.   The first head basketball coach listed is Frederick Schule back in 1905-06.  Schule from the University of Michigan was also the school’s head football coach plus let us not forget the director of the campus gymnasium.  Back in 1905 the Montana football program went 2-3 the following year 2-6.  Those two wins came against the Fort Shaw Indians and the Spokane Athletic Club.   Now at Michigan Mr. Schule played on a very good football team.  In 1903 the Michigan Wolverines not only went unbeaten but outscored their opponents that season 565 to 3!

After only two seasons Frederick Schule left Missoula and headed to Wisconsin.

By the way did I mentFrederick_Schuleion that Frederick the year before he came to Montana competed in the 1904 Olympic games in St. Louis?  Not only did he compete but he won gold in the 110 meter hurdles!

That’s right one of the Griz first football and basketball coaches was also an olympic gold medalist.
