Darla Tyler McSherry - Director Of Health Services With Montana State-Billings Talks On "Suicide On The Farm"

    9:00 AM-10:00 AM
    2019.01.29

Darla Tyler McSherry is the director of student health services at Montana State University Billings. She is trained to spot depression and suicide. But in her own father, she never saw what was coming.

He took his own life on the very farm where he was born and raised. Afterward, his daughter struggled with guilt. She’s now determined to take her family’s anguish and use it for good by advocating on behalf of other farmers who may be in crisis.
Her motivation is to honor his memory — and because she knows that her family isn’t alone.
The suicide rate in rural America is 45% greater than in large urban areas, according to a study released last fall by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A more recent CDC report said Montana’s suicide rate leads the nation, coming in at nearly twice the national average. A third long-touted CDC study, currently under review, listed farming in the occupational group, along with fishing and forestry, with the highest rate of suicide deaths.
That occupational study was based on 2012 data, when farming was strong and approaching its peak in 2013, says Jennifer Fahy, communications director for the nonprofit Farm Aid. Farmers’ net income has fallen 50% since 2013 and is expected to drop to a 12-year low this year, the US Department of Agriculture reports.
Darla will be taking your calls and texts on the subject.

A Legislative Report From Helena & Then Steve Daines (R) Member of Congress, United States Senate

    9:00 AM-10:00 AM
    2019.01.30

Senator Steve Daines joins us for the last half-hour of the show taking your calls and texts….

Steve Daines (born August 20, 1962) is an American entrepreneur and politician serving as the junior United States Senator from Montana since 2015. He is a member of the Republican party. He previously was the U.S. Representative for Montana’s at-large congressional district from 2013 to 2015. In the 2014 midterm election, he won an open seat, defeating Democrat Amanda Curtis.[2]

Steve Daines spent 13 years with Procter & Gamble. After seven years managing operations in the United States, he moved his family to Hong Kong and China for six years opening factories to expand Procter & Gamble’s Asian business.[8] During the 2014 campaign, this period became a campaign issue, with the Montana Democratic Party stating that he assisted the company in outsourcing U.S. jobs to China. Daines responded to this charge by saying that he created hundreds of jobs in Montana when he worked for RightNow Technologies.[9] In 1997, Daines left Procter & Gamble to join the family construction business in Bozeman. Three years later, Daines met Greg Gianforte, founder of RightNow Technologies, and was put in charge of running RightNow’s customer care division.[5] Daines went on to become Vice President of North America Sales and Vice President of the Asia-Pacific division. During his tenure, the cloud-based software company became a publicly traded company and Bozeman’s largest commercial employer. Daines remained with the company until March 2012, when he left to campaign full-time.[5]
